THE GUIDES

The Lodge at Red Rock is pleased to recommend the area’s most sought-after and seasoned guides.

Gord Ellis

A lifelong angler and hunter, Gord Ellis has explored many of northwestern Ontario’s most memorable outdoors destinations. His earliest memories are of fishing for brook trout with his father, and since then has spent countless hours on the area’s lakes and rivers.

He’s been a fishing guide on the Nipigon watershed since 2013 and has guided several hundred trips to date. His favourite part? Seeing someone catch their personal best, whether it’s northern pike, walleye, lake trout or brook trout. Gord was inducted into the Freshwater Fishing Hall of Fame in 2018, and the Canadian Angler Hall of Fame in 2024, for his contributions to the sport and heritage of fishing.

In addition to being an exceptionally knowledgeable angler, Gord is also just an interesting guy who loves to share his stories. He’s the award-winning senior editor of Ontario Out of Doors magazine, an outdoors columnist for Minnesota’s Northern Wild magazine and a frequent contributor to Quebec hunting and fishing publication Sentier Chasse-Pêche and CBC Radio. His other hat is as a musician and music journalist: he plays guitar and sings with two local bands, and has a regular column in Thunder Bay’s arts and culture magazine, The Walleye.

Marcel Boudreau

As a lifetime resident of Red Rock, Ontario, Marcel Boudreau of One on One Fishing knows practically every inch of its lands and waters. He started brook trout fishing with his dad and brothers as a kid, and has continued to expand his knowledge in the six-plus decades since. Through his extensive experience, he’s gained a deep appreciation for the area’s fishing spots, and is happy to share his expertise.

Marcel is an independent licensed and insured professional guide and a member of the Ontario Sport Fishing Guides Association. Over the last 10 years, he has guided a wide range of anglers, from North American women’s fly fishing groups to retirees working on their bucket list, and getting to know his clients is one of his favourite parts of the job. He makes sure to communicate with them before and during the trip to pinpoint their goals, personalize the excursion and maximize their chances of landing their dream fish.

Marcel is knowledgeable about a wide range of species and fishing spots, with plenty of experience catching brook trout on the Nipigon River.

Tim “Chum” Ruth

Tim “Chum” Ruth is a member of Red Rock Indian Band and has spent more than 45 years on the land and waters around Nipigon, Red Rock, Lake Superior and the Lake Helen Reserve. Chum learned how to fish from his dad, mimicking his casts from river beds, shorelines and a 12-foot boat. As a First Nations person, he says he and his family have always had a connection to these surroundings and their unique outdoor experiences, adding that these waters offer angling opportunities like no other, along with breathtaking views. He targets a range of fish species, including brook trout, lake trout, walleye, northern pike, bass and perch.

Chum approaches every guided fishing trip with an intention to create an experience that will exceed expectations and provide every opportunity for you to be successful. He’s known for being supportive and encouraging, with an emphasis on safety and being prepared.

Chum enjoys spending time with his clients, showing them new techniques, and sharing his knowledge of the water. Meeting new people who enjoy also fishing, and giving people the opportunity to tell a story about a fishing adventure—and now being in that story—are all part of his love of guiding.
